Under the supervision of Sitakant Mishra from Kalinga Films Distributors, producer T. Kranthi Kumar brought Jhili-Mili, an Odia remake of the Telugu film Leta Manasulu (1966), to the screen. Leta Manasulu itself was a remake of the Tamil movie Kuzhandaiyum Deivamum (1965), which was inspired by The Parent Trap (1961), and the Tamil version was later remade in Hindi as Do Kaliyan (1967). Following the success of Do Kaliyan, director K. H. D. Rao helmed Jhili-Mili under Kranti Kumar’s production banner, Sri Kranhti Enterprises. Influenced by the efforts of Kalinga Films manager Raman Rao, K. H. D. Rao introduced several South Indian producers to Odia cinema by remaking Telugu and Hindi films at lower costs. While some criticized this trend for negatively impacting Odia storytelling and culture, these remakes significantly increased the production of Odia films and provided more opportunities for Odia actors and actresses. Many of these remakes were released through Kalinga Films and are considered a defining feature of Odia cinema.
Bijay Mishra wrote the film’s dialogues, while Akshay Mohanty handled both music composition and lyrics, with songs rendered by Akshay Mohanty and S. Janaki. Rama Rao was responsible for the film’s cinematography, and shooting took place at Hyderabad Studios. The cast included Mahasweta Ray, Geeta Jain, Binodini, Sriram Panda, Shyamlendu, V. L. Swami, Netrananda Mishra, and child artist Luna Mahapatra, who played a double role. Basu co-directed the film.
