Jharana Das was born in 1945 in a Christian family in Chandini Chowk, Cuttack. His father Edwin Sukumar Das was a school teacher and mother Charuprabha Das was a BDO. In the family of 3 boys and 2 girls, Jharana was the second child. She was called Jhumu. There were ten brothers and sisters in household. The plays written by his mother were staged at home by the brothers and sisters by pulling on a bed and a saree. Jharana Das made her debut as a heroine in a play by Narasimha Mahapatra. Her elder brother’s close friends actor Akshay Mohanty (Kashyap) and musician Akshay Mohanty wanted Jhumu to become an actress. In the case of Jharana Das, her talent was visible from childhood. He used to play his father’s guitar very often. While studying in school without any training, he participated in the ‘Shishu Sansar’ program of Akashvani, Cuttack. Jharana Das learned Odissi dance from renowned Odissi dancer Kelucharan Mohapatra. She married to photographer Deepak Das.

Education

After matriculation from Mission Girls’ School, Jharana Das completed her graduation from Shailabala Women’s College. She is the first Odia actress to graduate. Jharana Das started doing radio plays while studying in college.

Acting and Directing

Jharana Das entered in Odia films through Amada Bata, made in 1964. In 1962, she acted as the female lead in Malajanha, which was released much later in 1965. Apart from films, she has also been involved in Akashvani & Doordarshan. He also directed a documentary made on Harekrushna Mahatab. While she was there, she acted in shows like “Ghara Bhada Dia Jiba” and “Manisha”. Along with this, she continued to act in films.
