Sibabrata Das, will be always remembered for his golden pen for carving so many evergreen lyrics in Odia. He was one of the most successful lyricist and writer of his time. Most of his songs were featured in movies and reached out a large number of audience through Radio.

Sibabrata was born on August 26, 1930 in a family of lyricists in Balasore. His father was Shachindra Das and mother Kumudini Devi. He married to Subasini Devi. He has a daughter and a son named Baby and Babi.

Sibabrata started writing poetry while studying at Ravenshaw College. There, Sibabrata came in contact with Jibanananda Pani who also a student at Ravenshaw. The two of them wrote many satirical poems together. “The Wheel” magazine published many English poems of Sibabrata at that time. His maternal uncle’s brother Parthasarathy Mahapatra was also a student of Sibabrata. Parthasarathy was also writing songs and Akshay Mohanty was giving tunes to those. After Parthasarathy moved to Delhi for job, Akshay came in contact with Sibabrata. By that time, Sibabrata was working in the police department. Akshay was impressed after reading Sibabrata’s poetry and requested him to write a song. Since then Akshay’s association with Sibabrata began Through Akshay, he met Shantanu Mahapatra. Shantanu submitted his songs to Akashvani, Cuttack. Bhubaneswar Mishra selected his written song ‘Kaincha Patar Saru’ for Akashvani’s program ‘Sajaphula’ and the song was aired on Akashvani sung by Raghunath Panigarahi with music given by Bhubaneswar Mishra.

Initially Sibabrata used to write for Akshay Mohanty. Storytelling through song was a trend that time and Sibabrata Das forwarded that trend. Be it ‘Chhuku Chhuku Sakalara Gaadi’ song or ‘Nadira Nama Alasa Kanya’ there was always a story in the lyrics of those songs penned by Sibabrata Das. ‘Raja Jhia Sange Karithili Bhaba’, ‘Ja Jaa Re Bhasi Jaa’, ‘Khira Ta Aintha Nira Bi Aintha’ are still popular now.

Sibabrata’s writing for films started with 1973 film ‘Ghara Bahuda’. His first film song was ‘Tu Ki Buli Baharilu Sahar’ in the voice of Akshay Mohanty. He wrote lyrics for all music composers of that period like Akashay Mohanty, Prafulla Kar, Upendra Kumar, Radhakrushna Bhanja, Sribatsa Patnaik. His written songs in Ghara Bahuda, Mana Akasha, Mamata, Dharitri, Krushna Sudama, Batighara, Sesha Srabana, Sindura Bindu, Ashant Graha, Ae Nuhen Kahani, Chilika Teerey, Pipasa and many others were huge popular.

He was in very much demand also for non-film songs. His written non-film songs like ‘Chandramalli Hase’, ‘Sara Rati Barasare Bhiji Bhiji Mun Go’, ‘Ei Jibana Ta Eka Natak’, ‘Aha Kuhana Bujhena Mu Ete Sabu Bahana’ are still popular with audience even today. Almost all artists like Akshay Mohanty, Chitta jena, Pranab Patnaik, Sikandar Alam, Prafulla Kar have given voice for his words. Sibabrata Das’s written lyrics means song superhit was guaranteed.

Sibabrata started writing in 1960 with ‘Kaincha Patar Saru’. First it was aired on Akashvani in the voice of Raghunath Panigrahi. Later HMV released disc of it. Since then till 1988 every song he wrote touched hearts of listeneres. His written lyrics in his last film ‘Sata Kebe Luchi Rahena’ was also popular. His songs had touch a fold tradition of Odisha. His selection words were not only amazing but also those unique words made the songs memorable. He mastered in use of symbolics like ‘Mun Tuma Manara Phula’, ‘Mun Tuma Bainshi Sura’.

He got unparalled expertise with words as well as with guns. Sibabrata Das won the gold medal as the best gunner in the police department. He represented Odisha in gun shooting at the national level for 25 years.

He wished to write more and more songs after retirement but unfortunately his wish remained unfulfiled. He left this mortal world after just one week of his retirement, at the age of 59.
