Note:
Chilika Teere is a 1978 Odia film directed by Biplab Roy Choudhury. It tells the story of oppressed and illiterate fisher-folk who are exploited by powerful business interests – and their eventual uprising against this injustice. The film received a Certificate of Merit for Best Odia Film at the 1978 National Film Awards. Chilika Teere marked the acting debut of Bijay Mohanty, although Nagaphasa was released earlier.
The film’s producer, Shyamaghana Choudhury, was involved in the prawn cultivation and marketing business and had firsthand knowledge of the struggles faced by the local prawn-fishing community around Chilika Lake in Odisha. Drawing from these real-life experiences, he penned the story himself and selected Biplab Roy Choudhury to direct the film.
‘Chilika Teere’ was re-screened by the Film Journalists’ Forum on 23 May 2015 following its restoration.
Plot:
Near Chilika Lake lies a cluster of villages inhabited by fisher-folk, who have long been exploited by large fishing corporations. Raghu, a spirited and revolutionary young villager, rises to lead his community in defiance against the oppressive companies. One such company manager, Sricharan, attempts to break their unity through manipulation and intimidation. However, the movement gains momentum. In a final act of rebellion, the villagers throw Sricharan into the waters of Chilika Lake as he tries to flee.
Raghu harbors feelings for Padma, a village girl from a different caste, but societal norms forbid their union. Disheartened yet determined, Raghu passes the torch of revolution to Jadu. He then departs with Padma, rowing across Chilika Lake in search of a new world and a new beginning.
