Rakta Golapa initially premiered at Laxmi Talkies in Jaipur during Deepavali, and was later screened at Deepak Talkies in Rourkela and Prabhat Talkies in Cuttack. The film was adapted from the play Pagala, written by Bijay Nanda. It marked the first and only film for which Dhananjay Satapathy composed the music. The director, Bhimeswar Rao, was the co-brother of renowned music director Upendra Kumar. Although Upendra Kumar did not compose for the film, he assisted in the recording of the songs. The outdoor sequences were filmed in Koraput, Jaipur, and surrounding areas, while the indoor scenes were shot in a studio in Chennai.
After being restored by the Film Journalists Forum, Rakta Golapa was re-screened at Jayadev Bhawan, Bhubaneswar on 28th April 2019.
