Sree Jagannath was released in 1950. The story was based on ‘Deula Tola’ (temple making) by Balaram Das, one of the Panchasakhas from medieval Odisha, dramatist Ashwin Kumar Ghosh’s Bengali drama ‘Purir Mandir’ and its Odia version ‘Sri Mandira’ respectively.

Lalita is the second Odia movie. Also the first Odia movie released post independence after a span of twelve years from the first Odia movie, Sita Bibaha. Makhanlal Banerjee (who played Bhagwan Ram) was the lead in the first Odia movie while his wife Uma Banerjee played lead in the second Odia movie Lalita.

Sita Bibaha is the first Odia film. Released in 1936, Sita Bibaha was directed and produced by Mohan Sundar Deb Goswami. It presented the marriage of Bhagwan Rama to Mata Sita, based on the epic story of Ramayana.
