Basudev Rath surely needs no introduction! He was an amazing music composer who created some of the most incredible tunes for Odia films. His golden era spanned from the mid-70s up until the late 80s. During this time, he consistently produced some of the absolute best and most beloved melodies in Odia cinema.

Basudev Rath was a musician in true sense. Every music lover in Odisha absolutely adores the songs of Basudev Rath! Be it bhajans or modern songs or movie songs.

Basudev Rath was born on March 7, 1956. He studied up to 7th standard in Revenshaw Collegiate School. Later, he completed his schooling at his uncle’s village Biraharekrishnapur. He has been interested in music since high school.

In 1970, he got the opportunity to play Spanish guitar in two films ‘Mana Akash’ and ‘Dharitri’. The beginning of his career dates back to 1975 with the movie Sakshi Gopinath, where he made his debut as a music composer. It had a total of 7 songs.

For the first time in 1976, he incorporated an orchestra into an Odia film.

Basudev Rath’s Brilliance in Music

Basudev Rath has composed over a thousand songs? That’s right, a whopping thousand! The magic of his melodies doesn’t just end there, he has also composed music for about 150 movies, 300 albums, and an impressive 83 geetinatyas. And, guess what – he’s dabbled in other film industry too! He’s worked on 8 Bengali films, leaving his unique musical imprint on them. But wait, there’s more! Alongside all his other achievements, he even created the music for the Prashant Nanda’s Hindi teleserial titled “Kharavel”.

Basudev Rath found success through collaborations with accomplished Bollywood singers like Manna Dey, Asha Bhosle, Mahendra Kapoor, Anup Jalota and Anuradha Poudwal.

He composed a good number of hit songs including ‘Maa Tume Jagatra Saha Bharasa’, ‘Gori Dekhili Kali Dekhili’, ‘Majhi Re’, ‘Jhumka Tike Tu Te Halei De’, ‘Emiti Rati’, ‘Chand Na Tume Tara’, ‘Jahaku Mun Ete Bhala Pauchi’ and many more. His major films were Sautuni, Kaberi, Chinha Achinna, Paka Kambal Pot Chhata, Anyay Sahib Nahi, Dekh Khabar Rakh Najar etc.

His final Odia film, ‘Tume Hi Sathi Mora’, hit the screens in 2015.
