Gour Prasad Ghose, often known as Rai Gour or Gour, was a well-known figure in the cinema industry. He began his career as a struggling actor and, by pure willpower and perseverance, rose to fame as an artist and a prestigious producer and director. In addition, he served as his own productions’ distributor.
He acted Hindi film ‘Sadma’ in 1951. His Odia film career began in 1949 with ‘Sree Jagannath’ as Shaktidhar, produced by Rupa Bharti Ltd.
With ‘Sree Jagannath’, renowned stage performers Rama Chandra Mania, Khagendra Nath Mitra, Samuel Sahu, and Kartik Kumar Ghosh also launched their film careers. The major actors were Gopal Ghosh and Gloria Raut, while Dhiren Das launched Chapala Naik (Parbati Ghose) as a kid artist (Nila Madhab).
When Gour Prasad Ghose switched to producing with “Bhai Bhai” in 1956, that was the turning point in his career. He could no longer be halted. He subsequently started producing popular, nominated films at a voracious pace. ‘Maa’ in 1959, ‘Laxmi’ in 1962, ‘Kaa’ in 1965, ‘Stree’ in 1968, and ‘Sansaar’ in 1971 are examples of such films.
Following ‘Sansaar’, he took a well-earned vacation from acting in motion pictures and turned to television. Given that television was by this point starting to get traction, it felt like the ideal opportunity to experiment and diversify his repertoire. He was the producer and director of the Odia telefilms ‘Hawker’ and ‘Samadhan’.
His films all enjoyed enormous success and popularity and established important precedents for the Odia film industry. His films were all notable for accurately capturing social and cultural aspects. He never traded artistic integrity for financial gain. He received both awards for his art and box office success alongside his wife Parbati Ghose. Throughout his career, he promoted well-known theatre and radio performers and helped numerous up-and-coming actors break into the film industry.
