Gouri – The Odia Remake of a Bengali Classic

The late 1970s marked an interesting chapter in Odia cinema. Among the films that stood out during this period was Gouri, an ambitious remake of the Bengali hit Swayamsiddha. But the story behind its making is as fascinating as the film itself.

The Comeback of Dhira Biswal

After the collapse of Panchasakha Pictures, producer Dhira Biswal wasn’t ready to give up on his dream. He had already left his law practice to pursue filmmaking full-time, producing the successful film Dharitri under his banner Progressive Film Production. Yet, financial constraints forced him to pause. For someone as passionate and determined as Dhira Babu, that was never the end. Armed with confidence and organizational skills, he began planning a new project that would leave a mark.

A New Partnership

At the same time, Jagadish Saha, a well-known film distributor from Calcutta, opened a distribution office in Cuttack. Along with Magiya Bhai, son of Narottam Bhai (Manager of Parbhat Cinema), they formed N.J. Films. Soon, discussions between Dhira Biswal and Jagadish Saha led to the birth of D.J. Productions – a joint venture also involving Magiya Bhai and S.P. Harlalka, another major distributor from Calcutta.

Interestingly, these big names in film distribution often worked from the same office in Calcutta, sharing space but running separate businesses – proof of the strong personal bonds in the industry back then.

Choosing the Story: Swayamsiddha

D.J. Productions wanted something strong for their first major venture – and what better than the story of Swayamsiddha? The Bengali original had already proven its worth, winning hearts with its powerful narrative. It was even adapted into Hindi later, with equal success.

The Odia remake was titled Gouri – a name that would soon become iconic in Odia cinema.

Behind the Camera

The responsibility of directing Gouri fell on Dhira Biswal himself – his first and only directorial project. Assisting him was the experienced Calcutta filmmaker Sushil Mukherjee, though his name never appeared in the credits (by choice).

The film brought together some of the best talents of the time:

  • Cinematography: Rajan Kinnagi
  • Music: Prafulla Kar (who also penned some lyrics along with Nizam)
  • Playback: Chitta Jena, S. Janaki, Vani Jayaram
  • Dance Direction: Madhav Kishan (from Bombay)

The songs were a highlight – recorded at Gemini Studios in Madras and filled with melodies that became instant favorites. Tracks like E Gaon Ra Maudamani Go Aam Gouri Nani and Gora Gora Gale Moro Kala Kala Jai still hold nostalgic value for Odia music lovers.

Songs

  • Ki Sundara Aaha Ki Aananda Maya (Singers: Chitta Jena, Vani Jayaram I Lyrics: Bhakta Kabi Madhusudan Rao)
  • Ei Gaanra Mauda Mani Go (Singers: Vani Jayaram, Chorus I Lyrics: Prafulla Kar)
  • Rajani Go Mo Priya Nayane (Singer: S. Janaki I Lyrics: Prafulla Kar)
  • Paichi Ae Jibane (Singer: Vani Jayaram I Lyrics: Prafulla Kar)
  • Gora Gora Gale Mora (Singer: S. Janaki I Lyrics: Nizam)

The Screenplay Controversy

The screenplay and dialogues were crafted by renowned playwright Biswajit Das, who later expressed disappointment with how the final film shaped up. In his book Bilapa Ru Alap Jaye, he criticized the film for prioritizing commercial elements over artistic depth – a critique that created ripples when published in Jeevanrang magazine.

The Star Cast

The title role of Gouri was essayed by the elegant Mahasweta Ray, with Prashant Nanda delivering a stellar performance opposite her. The cast also included Dhira Biswal, Govind Tej, Ajit Das, Kedar Guru, Prafulla Das, Nagen Das, Narendra Behera (Nari), Leela Dulali, Suresh Bala (Banku), Rukmini, Purnima and several prominent names of the era.

Filming took place in and around Cuttack and at Indrapuri Studios, while editing and post-production were handled in top studios across Calcutta, Madras, and Bombay – giving the film a polished, pan-Indian touch.

A Memorable Release

Gouri released in October 1979 at Cuttack’s iconic Prabhat and Laxmi theaters, where it received tremendous appreciation from audiences. Its success was further cemented when it bagged State Film Awards for:

  • Best Director – Dhira Biswal
  • Best Actor – Prashant Nanda
  • Best Actress – Mahasweta Ray

Even today, Gouri stands as a remarkable example of collaboration, passion, and creativity in Odia cinema – a film born out of determination and storytelling brilliance.
