Malajanha, (Alternative Title: The Dead Moon) released in 1965, is regarded as the first new wave cinema in Odia. Considered at par with Satyajit Ray’s path-breaking Pather Panchali, it claimed the coveted President’s Certicate of merit for best Odia film in National Film Awards (1965). Written and directed by Nitai Palit, Malajanha based on novel of the same title by the Odia novelist Upendra Kishore Das.

Producer Basant Naik had a deep love for cinema since childhood and possessed a sharp sense for identifying stories with commercial potential. He began his professional journey in his family’s jewellery business (Jyotsna Alankar Bhandar, Cuttack) before moving into the wholesale trade of agricultural fertilizers and pesticides. His unintended involvement in the post-production of the Odia film ‘Jajabara’ in Bombay exposed him to the technical side of filmmaking and ignited a passion that eventually evolved into his full-time profession in later years. He established Brajaraj Movies and ventured into film production and distribution.
Nagaphasa marked the first film under Brajaraj Movies, a distinguished production house in Odia cinema. It was the debut venture of renowned producer-distributor Basant Naik, who also directed the film. Nagaphasa holds the distinction of being the first released movie featuring actor Bijay Mohanty, who played the antagonist. Although Bijay Mohanty had signed Chilika Teerey earlier, Nagaphasa reached theatres first. The popular song “Mo Kola To Jhulana To Aakhi Mo Aaina” from the movie later inspired two Odia film titles – ‘Mo Kola To Jhulana’ produced by Basant Naik, and ‘To Akhi Mo Aaina’ produced by Kailash Moharana.
The film was entirely shot on location rather than in a studio. Key scenes were filmed at Basant Naik’s residence in Dargah Bazar, Cuttack, his farmhouse in Beleswar on the outskirts of the city, and in the forests near Chandaka and Baranga. The songs were recorded at Technician Studio in Calcutta, and the post-production work was completed in Bombay.
